ChatGPT Record: an overview

ChatGPT Record is a feature in ChatGPT that records audio, such as a meeting or a voice note, writes it out as text and makes a summary.

Limitations

Mac only. Record works only in the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS. It is not available on phones or on Windows.
Works best in English. OpenAI says accuracy for other languages "is improving but can vary".
Calendar auto-join covers Google Meet only. For Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Webex and other links, recording has to be started by hand in the Mac app.
4 hours per session. A recording stops automatically at 240 minutes, and notes are made from what was recorded.
Mistakes happen. OpenAI notes that transcripts can contain errors and that important details should be checked.

Records through the Mac's microphone and system audio, and transcribes live while a timer runs.
Recording can be paused and resumed.
After the recording is sent, ChatGPT creates notes with a summary. These are usually saved as a canvas in the chat.
The notes can be edited, or turned into an email or a project plan.
Several speakers are told apart in the transcript. Unknown speakers are labelled "Speaker 1" and so on, and can be renamed afterwards.
With "Reference record history" turned on, ChatGPT can use earlier recordings to answer questions in new chats, for example about what was decided in a meeting.

With Google Calendar connected in ChatGPT, Record can join scheduled meetings on its own.
This only works when the calendar event uses a Google Meet link.

A newer Meetings plugin in the ChatGPT desktop app takes notes and saves summaries with action items.
In beta on Mac for Pro and Business users. Windows and Enterprise support are listed as coming later.

Audio is used only for transcription and is deleted afterwards. It is not used for training.
Business, Enterprise and Edu: content, including Record transcripts and notes, is excluded from training by default.
Plus and Pro: transcripts and notes may be used for training if "Improve the model for everyone" is on. The setting can be turned off.
Transcripts and notes follow the same retention rules as other chats. A deleted chat is removed from OpenAI's systems within 30 days, unless the law requires otherwise.

On Business, Enterprise and Edu, workspace owners can turn Record on or off under Settings → Workspace Controls.
Record is off by default on Enterprise and Edu and has to be turned on by an owner.
Owners can also turn "Reference record history" on or off for the workspace.

OpenAI places responsibility on the person recording: check local law and get the right consent before recording others.

A headset and less background noise improve transcript quality.
The Mac must allow ChatGPT to use the microphone and to record screen and system audio.
